South Korean pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin on Thursday pitched seven stellar innings as the Los Angeles Dodgers blasted three home runs to rout the Atlanta Braves 6-0 in the opening game of their National League playoff series.

Los Angeles leads the series 1-0 after defeating Atlanta 6-0 in Game 1 on Thursday.

Kershaw was the Dodgers' starting pitcher to open the postseason each of the past five seasons, but manager Dave Roberts said the decision to have Ryu start Game 1 and Kershaw Game 2 "was more of just trying to appreciate that both games have equal importance, and what we can do to put both pitchers in the best position to succeed".

The Dodgers shows how they made the World Series last season flashing their power with three early home runs and jumping out to a big lead early.

Jansen gave up a hit but closed out the game for the save in a 3-0 win.

Milwaukee's pitchers took a one-hit shutout into the ninth inning, but then things got away from closing pitcher Jeremy Jeffress.

"Obviously, it's a huge sacrifice for him", Roberts said. "They weren't acting like this was anything but a regular-season game, and that definitely resonated with me".

The Dodgers have scored their first seven runs of this series off of home runs. One, Kershaw was not laboring and seemingly could have easily closed out the game. Joc Pederson led off with a ringing double, and nearly got left at third base.

Ryu's seven-inning stint matched the longest by a Dodgers starter during the 2017 postseason. Turner followed Pederson's homer with a double and Muncy walked. Nick Markakis went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, and Albies was 0 for 3.

Machado hit a two-run shot on a 3-0 pitch from Sanchez with two outs in the first.

Yasmani Grandal also went deep, his coming in the fifth inning. In fact, I already noticed the backlash against "playoff Kershaw" when Braves wunderkind Acuna led off with a double. Ex-Dodger Charlie Culberson grounded into a fielder's choice to shortstop, with Inciarte out at second. I mean, we're lucky he got out of the first inning.

"A guy with his pedigree and his track record, we're pretty excited to have him going tomorrow night", Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner said of Kershaw.

"I wasn't sure how I was going to feel, and I was a little nervous before the game, but there is a lot of experience on this team and that really helped me out", said Muncy, who was playing in his first postseason game.

Ryu allowed a two-out single to Freddie Freeman in the first.

"You know, that is something we do special is being real tough outs one through nine (in the batting order)", Pederson said.

Braves manager Brian Snitker said he is leaning toward using the 27-year-old right-hander when the series shifts to Atlanta on Sunday. "And the way Dylan's been throwing the baseball and kind of how he matched up with certain guys on their roster, we felt good about that".

Gausman joined the Braves from Baltimore at the non-waiver trade deadline in July in a six-player deal. Buehler last pitched on Monday, allowing one hit in 6 2/3 innings and striking out three in the NL West tiebreaker victory over the Rockies.
