He played murder suspect Harvey Oberst in race drama In the Heat of the Night, and murderer Richard Hickock opposite Robert Blake in Richard Brooks' film adaptation of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood. However, most will remember him for his portrayal of Hershel Greene from The Walking Dead, the farmer who acted as the group's moral compass, a role he played from 2011 to 2014. Wilson played the role of Hershel Greene in the show, but his character was discontinued after Season 4, wherein he was killed by the Governor. Wilson had already filmed his scenes.

About an hour earlier, "The Walking Dead" showrunner Angela Kang announced Wilson along with two other former cast members will return to the series for its ninth season.

Actor Titus Welliver, whom Wilson starred alongside on Amazon Studios' police procedural Bosch, tweeted a short but heartfelt tribute to his co-star.

No details about Wilson's cause of death have been released. "Don't make me cry", the actor added to a jammed packed venue.
