When Toney approached the vehicle, shots were fired from inside the auto. Police say Maynard remains at large and should be considered armed and risky. A 19-year-old man named Isaiah Pretlow was also in the vehicle with Maynard at the time of the shooting.

Officer Antwan Toney, who had just turned 30, was responding with another officer to a call of possible marijuana use, said Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department.

Officer Toney had just turned 30 years old and was about to celebrate his third anniversary with the Gwinnett County police, according to WSB. "The suspect vehicle fled the scene; it is unknown if anyone in the vehicle was struck by return fire". The officers had returned fire and it was unclear whether anyone in the vehicle was wounded or whether the auto simply crashed while fleeing, Smith said. Police believe Maynard shot Toney, and had launched an area manhunt as he faced charges of aggravated assault and felony murder.

Pretlow then drove the vehicle a short distance before crashing, and as many as four occupants fled on foot, police said.
