Curtis has returned to the role that made her famous in the original Halloween in 1978, with one-time babysitter Laurie Strode now a psychologically damaged grandmother who has lived her life preparing for a showdown with masked psychopathic killer Michael Myers.

It's the season for spooky movies, and the new take on horror classic Halloween scared up a monster $77.5 million opening weekend.

David Gordon Green directed the "Halloween" sequel which brings back Jamie Lee Curtis as Laurie Strode and Nick Castle as Michael Myers. The film's opening is also the second largest ever for an R-rated horror, topping the $53.8 million opening for The Nun a month ago and behind It's $123.4 million debut last September.

It was also enough to bump the comic-book film "Venom" out of the No. 1 spot and into third place in its third weekend in theaters with $18.1 million.

Meanwhile, people are still seeing A Star Is Born and Venom, which took the second and third spots on this weekend's box office chart respectively. It picked up a solid $7.5 million, taking its total earnings to $10.5 million. Internationally, "Halloween" earned $14.3 million from 23 markets. The horror genre is one of the most enduring in Hollywood, even as the box office has become more challenging, with titles regularly breaching expectations. That brings its North American tally to $28 million.

Rounding out the top five were Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween and First Man, which earned $9.7 and $8.5 million, respectively. Few of the directors that followed in Carpenter's wake have his cinematic craft, and the tension and scares of that first film were quickly replaced by violence and gore.

In the indie realm, Jonah Hill's directorial debut Mid90s is setting its own little records, giving A24 two of the year's three best opening-frame per-theater averages to date, according to Deadline.

"The industry is on a major roll right now", said comScore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian.

That means Halloween was pretty heavily frontloaded, but also Universal could be playing it cool with its estimate and lowballing the weekend total. Where available, the latest global numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included.
