"Suddenly, I heard her yell, "No, no, no!" Her body was found in a auto near a campus medical facility.

I occasionally hear the term "tragedy" to describe a loss in sports.

The University of Utah was on lockdown for a almost two hours late Monday night after a female student was fatally shot on the Salt Lake City campus.

The university imposed the lockdown shortly before 10 p.m., after the McCluskey's was found in a vehicle near the medical towers.

Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots, police said. Jill McCluskey said she stayed on the phone until a woman picked it up and said that her items were scattered about. Suddenly, I heard her yell, "No, no, no!' I thought she might have been in a auto accident".

This is heartbreaking. Lauren McCluskey's mother, Jill, was on the line with her daughter right before she was shot by her ex-boyfriend, Melvin Rowland.

A friend finally told Lauren McCluskey about her boyfriend's criminal history, and the student ended the relationship with Rowland on October 9.

Once inside the church, officers found Rowland dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

Lauren McCluskey, a senior from Pullman, Wash. who majored in communications, was found in a auto shortly before 10 p.m. local time.

In the November 19, 2014 photo, Pullman High School senior Lauren McCluskey is surrounded by her family before signing a letter of intent in Pullman, Wash., to compete in track for the University of Utah. "Lauren was an accomplished and exceptional young woman and student-athlete, and our thoughts are with the University of Utah community and all those who were touched by Lauren as we grieve this tragic loss".

Asked if law enforcement had done enough to protect her, university police chief Dale Brophy said, "I want the answer to that question as well. The detective had been in contact with Ms. McCluskey, and they were working to build a case". Following reports of gunshots, they discovered the body of Lauren McCluskey, a senior from Pullman, Wash., in a auto parked outside the south tower of the Medical Plaza.

Around 8:20 p.m., university police received a report of a possible abduction in a parking lot outside a residence hall. Less than a month later, she was dead. It sounds like she fit the description of another term that is overused in athletics, but applies better to her life: greatness. She said Lauren "previously dated her killer for about one month" and ended the relationship in early October after learning "he lied to her about his name, his age, and his criminal history".

A vigil is planned at the track and field at Pullman High School on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

The University of Utah campus is on lockdown after a shooting.

The campus remains open on Tuesday, although classes were canceled.

Police continue to search for a man they say shot and killed the student. That order remained in effect until just before midnight, after police determined the suspect had left the area.

"I will be joining them to pay my respects and offer my support to Lauren's friends, family and the entire campus community".
