"Modern Family" on Wednesday night finally killed off the "significant character" writers had been hyping since last month - and it wasn't the dog.

"We're handling some bigger life events in this season".

"It occurred to us that death is a giant part of the family experience and while Phil had lost his mother in a previous episode, we've never seen the entire family have to deal with such a loss", creator Steven Levitan told The Hollywood Reporter.

Claire learned in a phone call that DeDe died peacefully in her sleep, prompting family members to reminisce about the feisty and sometimes-critical DeDe.

He continued: "It seemed like the right character to put everybody through something". The sombre occasion is humorously juxtaposed by their silly costumes, most evident when Claire struggles with her spider outfit to hug her brother Mitchell dressed as Prince Harry.

Long was warned ahead of Season 10 what would happen to Dede and "was very sweet about it", according to Levitan. This was a good way to get a great sendoff.

The producers behind the series, which is in the midst of what could be its final season, have been teasing a significant character death since September.

There were also plenty of laughs in the heartfelt episode, from the costumes, such as Cam dressing up as Meghan Markle, to poorly-timed announcements (the "Welcome to Hell" doorbell comes on right as they're about to say DeDe is in a better place). "We liked that challenge".

When you think of a major death in a long-running sitcom or television series, you think of something like "The Sopranos" when Adriana LaCerva was brutally murdered by Silvio Dante, "The Good Wife" killing off Will Gardner, or 'Game of Thrones' killing. well, everybody.

"That's what happens with death: It comes at very odd and freaky moments and can strike at any time", he continued. "It's been a thing of mine for as long as I can remember", Levitan added. "By setting this during Halloween, we could find some comedy on such a sad day".
