The White House says it is pushing ahead with plans to establish a new US space force, but the first steps will stop short of creating a sixth branch of the military as touted earlier this year by President Donald Trump.

Pointing to past studies that have called for reform of USA space capabilities, Pence said it is time to "stop studying the problem and start fixing it".

But congressional support of the Space Force proposal is not certain, and Pentagon officials have said standing up a new military service could cost billions of dollars.

Creating a new branch of the military would be subject to Congress' approval, but the council, led by Vice President Mike Pence, is recommending that the nation build a Space Force and structures that would usher it into existence. The new military branch could be established as soon as 2020.

Earlier in the day, Vice President Mike Pence said the space force was essential to protect the US' assets, particularly satellites.

The vice president said countries like China and Russian Federation have launched attacks against US satellites from Earth and are aiming to do so in space.

"Space - exactly the same potential battlefield, like the land, sky and sea, and America will dominate there just as now we dominate here on Earth", - said Vice-President of the United States.

However, the joint Space command will be formed on the model of the already existing special operations Command, said Pence.

The USSF will include a new space combatant command to establish a chain of command for the new branch once the next budget and NDAA have been passed by Congress.

"It will not in the first instance look like other branches of the service. It will be a consolidation, we believe, and from there future Congresses and future administrations can grow and expand and nurture.the space force as they see fit", Pence said.

"The time has come to write the next great chapter in the history of the armed forces of the United States, to turn the page to an evolution of our armed forces, to meet the challenges and opportunities on that limitless frontier", Pence said.
