Confirmed: WhatsApp to Display Ads Inside the Status Tab Very Soon

"No one wakes up excited to see more advertising, no one goes to sleep thinking about the ads they'll see tomorrow", WhatsApp said in a blog post in 2012.

WhatsApp is a free chat service that has remained ad-free until now. Today, following recent speculation, WhatsApp's Vice President, Chris Daniels, has confirmed that ads will soon be coming to the app.

"...around monetisation plans for WhatsApp, we already announced that we are going to be putting ads in "Status".

Daniels added that ads in the Status section would be the "primary monetization mode for the company as well as an opportunity for businesses to reach people on WhatsApp".

Regardless of how sad this news makes me, I can not pretend to be surprised.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's goal to monetise WhatsApp has forced the social media messaging service's co-founders to leave the company. This was something that WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton felt uncomfortable with up until his departure from the company in November 2017.

"I sold my users' privacy to a larger benefit". It said that when advertising is involved "you the user are the product", and even started with a Fight Club quote - "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need". In fact, WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton who made his exit from the company previous year recently revealed that Facebook had plans to put ads inside WhatsApp even before its acquisition. "Facebook will start monetising WhatsApp, and show ads in the "Status" section of the app". Judging from its huge purchase years back, we knew it was bound to happen sooner or later.
