Logano bumps and slides past Truex in thrilling finish

Truex slid sideways across the finish line and promptly declared Logano won't take his title from him this year. On the final turn of the last lap the two made contact with Logano getting into the side of Truex Jr.'s auto heading to the checkered flag.

Truex had the chequered flag in sight when Logano pulled his bump-and-run move, and the two drivers briefly lost control before Logano got by coming to the flag.

Eight drivers started the day vying for the four spots in the season-finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The regular season was so dominated by Truex, Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick it has just been assumed the so-called "Big 3" would gobble up three of the four championship berths. Logano was booed, Truex joined the jeering from pit road and the crew chiefs exchanged angry words.

Logano said he did what he had to do in trying to clinch a spot in the final round of the Playoffs.

"I'm just not going to let him win it; I'm going to win it...he may have won the battle, but he ain't won the damn war". As Logano picked his way through traffic, Hamlin was able to close in on his bumper.

Logano seemed to be aware that the way he won was unpopular, but his eyes were on the bigger prize.

"As far as I'm concerned that's just a comment that I don't think we deserve".

But it's quintessential NASCAR, not all that different from what Logano did to Matt Kenseth to win a playoff race at Kansas three years ago. "Some may not like it".

Logano led a race-high 309 laps on his way to victory lane. The racing was clean and Truex was an on-track gentleman, a sportsman worthy to be called champion, in taking the lead from Logano.

Truex and Logano raced side-by-side over the final 10 laps, and Truex took the lead coming off Turn 2 on the final lap. Bowyer believes the tough short track provides him with his best opportunity to claim a victory over the next three weeks.

"I raced him as hard as I race everybody", said Truex. We were going to race hard for it in my book. And I cleared him fair and square. We weren't even banging doors for me to pass him.

"And he just drove into the back of me and knocked me out of the way". "Any time anybody wins, whether it was last weekend or the last race here, when everybody goes home the teams dissect every single aspect of that race".

"What goes around comes around", Truex told NBCSN.

"Brad could have blocked (Truex)". Denny Hamlin snuck by Truex for a second.

Hamlin is a five-time victor at the Virginia paperclip. "I hope he's proud of himself". About an hour before the race, Ally Financial said it would sponsor the next two seasons for Johnson.

UP NEXT: The middle race of the third round of the playoffs, Sunday at Texas Motor Speedway.
