Cody's father, Jeff Coffman, confirmed that his son had been killed in the shooting - "his name is Cody Coffman and he is my first born son", he told reporters. Somewhere between 10 and 15 more were injured.

During an interview with CNN, Sgt. Eric Buschow of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said Helus was a "true cop's cop", enthusiastic and excited about his work in law enforcement.

Three of the deadliest mass shootings in USA modern history have occurred since October 2017.

Jason Coffman displays a photo of his son Cody outside the Thousands Oaks Teene Center where he came hoping to find his son who was at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Nov.8, 2018. "He would go to the ends of the Earth to find a suspect".

Ventura County sheriff's Capt. Garo Kuredjian said hundreds of people were inside the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks at 11:20 p.m., and shots were still being fired when deputies arrived. He added that Helus was a "hard-working, dedicated Sheriff's Sergeant". "And tonight, as I told his wife, he died a hero because he went in to save lives".

Speaking at a news conference today, the sheriff said the suspect had been identified as a veteran of the United States Marine Corps.

The sheriff said Long is believed to have killed himself after opening fire on the crowd.

"I can not believe that this happened to my family", he said.

"He [reloaded] in about six seconds, which is really fast, so he knew what he was doing", she told reporters. The deputies called in mental health specialists.

Victim Justin Meek, 23, was identified by officials at Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, where he recently graduated.

Authorities are expected to release the names of the victims later Thursday as police provided updates on the investigation.

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shooting and praised law enforcement officers for their response.
