Kevin McCarthy Elected House Minority Leader

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy defeated Rep. Jim Jordan Wednesday to retain his post as the top Republican in the House a week after Democrats flipped control of the chamber.

In McCarthy, Republicans have boosted one of the party's strongest fundraisers and campaign strategists to replace retiring House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also has an encyclopedic knowledge of Republican members' families and districts.

Democrats won every single statewide election in the First State this year, flipping the offices of the state treasurer and the state auditor of accounts. "Voting against her on the floor is a vote for Trump and (House Republican Leader Kevin) McCarthy, and that's not what they told voters".

Jordan says Republicans must be prepared to fight investigations of Trump and his administration that House Democrats plan when they have the majority in January.

Jordan, a founder of the conservative freedom caucus, told Fox News's Fox & Friends on Wednesday that if he is elected to the leadership job, he will work on "doing what we told the American people we were gonna do".

During a closed-door session with House Republicans, the California lawmaker took a decisive victory against Jordan, bringing in 159 votes to the OH representative's 43 votes. "I won't vote for her under any circumstances", Spanberger told Roll Call, and she told CNN on Monday that she wants a leader who would "heal some of the divisions in our communities".

Pelosi has pledged to reinstate a special committee on climate change after Democrats take control of the House.

"I'm just trying to figure out what's going on", said Rep. -elect Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., a former member of the state legislature. "I think, for the first time, there is a legitimate chance for a third-party candidate".

It is a hard job under the best circumstances, pitting leaders against anxious members who feel ineffective.

Another veteran GOP legislator blamed the party for failing to differentiate itself from President Trump and the national Republican Party.

The decision is up to the Republican Steering Committee, whose members don't like Jordan and could ignore the president's wishes. Democrats picked up at least 32 seats, with several races still undecided. He succeeded on the money front, transferring roughly $5.7 million to candidates in just two weeks in October, but failed to keep numerous seats in his home state. None of them won last Tuesday. That leaves McCarthy in a weaker position than he had hoped going into the Wednesday vote.

On election night, the Republicans were certain that they would be keeping Arizona red and flipping the Senate seat in Florida, making their gains more significant. John Cornyn as Majority Whip (that position is term-limited) and Iowa Sen.

Scalise was considering running for House speaker if Republicans kept their majority, but opted to stay in his current post as whip.

Wake County also had some significant losses for the GOP, with the House's powerful budget chair, Nelson Dollar, losing his seat and two of the six Senate pickups for Democrats also coming from the county. The number three leadership slot is typically in charge of messaging and acting as a liaison between leadership and rank and file members.

Cheney would take over the leadership job from Washington state's Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who stepped down from the position. "House Democratic leaders probably don't want to take up such a potentially explosive issue too soon after finally clawing back a modicum of power in Trump's Washington", Scott writes.

Then there's the non-magnanimous Trump, who used his postelection news conference to trash, by name, losing House Republican candidates who had dared to distance themselves in any way from him and his record.

House Democrats, who hold the majority following this year's midterm elections, will select their leadership at the end of the month. It's, this leadership needs to turn the reins over to the next generation of Democrats.
