The 64-year-old has been open about the hard relationship she had with her mother when she was young. TMZ confirmed that she passed away on Thanksgiving Day after Winfrey's niece, Alisha Hayes, revealed the news on social media.

Private funeral services were held.

Memorial donations in Lee's name can be made to Feeding America. After Winfrey gave birth and her son died in infancy, "My father said to me, 'This is your second chance".

Oprah spent Thanksgiving at home in Montecito, where she hosted a dinner for family and friends. Winfrey lived with her grandmother for the first six years of her life, before moving to Milwaukee to live with her mother.

Sources said that "even though she didn't have the best relationship with Vernita, her passing was really devastating for her". "I loved her the way that she loves people now".
