It will be followed by Kona electric in limited numbers and the heavily overhauled next generation Creta as well as Tucson are slated for the near future, as Hyundai aims to further increase its market share in the SUV space.

The 2020 Hyundai Palisade, which goes on sale next summer, is the biggest SUV the carmaker has ever offered - with three-row seating for up to eight adults.

The new model is actually really new, as it sits on a new, distinct platform.

Setting its sights on the Toyota Highlander (Kluger) and Nissan Pathfinder in the USA market, the Palisade arrives as the spiritual successor to the Santa Fe XL - a long-wheelbase version of the previous-generation seven-seat large SUV sold Down Under. The steering wheel is very similar to the one used for the new Santa Fe.

Hyundai's on-again, off-again relationship with crossovers not named "Santa Fe" is complicated. The headlights are in line with the recent Hyundai trend toward a sharper, more streamlined look, and the effect is quite successful. What Lee described as "alligator eye" headlamps are framed by LED running lights.

More details will be revealed when the Hyundai Palisade makes its debut at the LA Auto Show. Palisade achieves this low drag coefficient with specific design cues that include a fast A-pillar angle, a rear spoiler side garnish, an optimized front cooling area with an extended internal air guide, aero underside panels, and rear wheel aero deflectors.

Exterior design is all about making the SUV feel BIG, inside is elegant but luxurious.

The Hyundai Palisade has reconfigurable rear cargo with an available power rear-folding, unfolding and reclining third-row seatback.

Huyndai offers a sophisticated Driver Talk in-car intercom system with rear seat conversation and sleep modes for the vehicle.

In terms of connectivity, drive assist and safety features, the list of what's included is big and comprehensive.

The Palisade also comes with a rear occupant warning system that monitors for children and pets, reminding the driver to check the rear seats when exiting the vehicle.

Powering the large SUV will be a 3.8-liter V6 direct injected petrol engine which will deliver 291 hp and 355 Nm.

It is equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission "with a multi-plate torque converter and offers both two-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations". The HTRAC system can be configured via several different drive modes, each one tweaking the behavior and location of the torque from the V-6. "We're in the SUV game big time", said Brian Smith, Hyundai's USA chief operating officer, during the debut of the Palisade at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
