"WANTED for dropping his fiancée's ring", they wrote on Twitter.

After recovering the ring Saturday, police kicked off a manhunt on social media, tweeting several photos of the ring, which they cleaned for the couple, along with security footage of their reaction to its fall.

The NYPD has released pictures of the couple and the ring in the hope of reuniting them with the jewellery.

In the end, there was an appeal by the Commissioner of the New York City Police Department himself: "If anyone can find this (un) lucky couple, it's New Yorkers and the millions who visit Times Square". "We're making arrangements to get them their ring back", the NYPD tweeted.

Good news came earlier today, with reports the couple had been located.

Daniella said yes straight away but they both knew the ring wasn't the right size. The now-affianced man dropped the ring just before midnight Friday, according to the New York Daily News.

"I couldn't stand the thought of her being without one", Mr Drennan said.

Anthony said "yes" and wore the ring - even though it was too big.

"We are so happy, we can't believe it", they told the BBC on Sunday evening.

"We just presumed it was gone".

Afterwards, they put out a call on social media asking others to help identify the couple.

"We don't use Twitter - we had absolutely no idea this was going on".

"We would like to thank everyone who shared this story!"
