Jay Gruden Says Redskins Considered Colin Kaepernick

Redskins coach Jay Gruden recently said that they chose to pass over Kaepernick because there was no time to get a new QB caught up on their system, or to install both a new QB and a new system.

Reed, safety blanket on and off the field, has taken extra steps to help Sanchez get comfortable in the offense. In 2009, Sanchez's rookie year, the Jets started the season 4-6 but ended the season by winning five of their last six games, locking up the wildcard spot.

"It's just going to be a matter of which way do we want to go?" Redskins defensive line coach Jim Tomsula was the 49ers' head coach for one season during Kaepernick's time.

Now, the Redskins are once again on the market for a quarterback, needing someone to come in and backup Sanchez in case he too goes down. "These guys are going to run their routes, they're going to have their nuances and it's going to be up to us to get a couple extra reps here and there". But they're still alive in the playoff race, trailing Dallas by one game in the NFC East.

For the Redskins, signing Kaepernick would make sense, if they truly felt that this season was salvageable, and were willing to do anything to try and save it. The team had a short week before playing on Thanksgiving and Gruden wanted someone who could fit in as soon as possible. "He's been talked about and discussed, but we'll probably go a different direction". "It's very hard. Whoever the backup is, they have to have skill sets similar to Mark, that he can fit into the plays we're going to run vs. the Giants". Kaepernick's signing is not remotely similar to that of Foster, but the Redskins have a habit of slipping into the national spotlight.

So now the Redskins, who at 6-6 are a game back of the first-place Cowboys in the NFC East, will start a quarterback, in Sanchez, who last week saw his first National Football League regular-season action since 2016 and have a backup who hasn't thrown a pass in a regular-season game since 2011.
