Trump nominates ex-Fox News anchor Nauert as United Nations envoy

Mr Trump will make the announcement in the coming hours that State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert will take up the plum role, Bloomberg reported, citing three sources.

On Friday, Trump revealed Haley's replacement at the global body, confirming that he intends to appoint US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert, a former Fox News correspondent, to the position.

Trump told reporters that Nauert, who is in line to take over from Nikki Haley, had proven herself as a "very talented, very smart" member of his administration.

Heather Nauert, who has shown poise in front of the cameras and mostly avoided gaffes, would succeed Nikki Haley, a former SC governor seen as entertaining ambitions for higher political office.

Nauert was camera-ready when she came to the State Department in April 2017, having worked at ABC and Fox.

Assuming that Nauert wins Senate approval after her upcoming confirmation hearing, the United Nations post will be her first policy role in the U.S. government.

Trump to nominate William Barr, former Bush 41 attorney general, for attorney general and Heather Nauert as the United Nations ambassador.

Nauert said on Twitter she was "humbled" by Trump's confidence in her and looked forward "to continuing the outstanding job Amb".

"She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time", Trump told reporters on November 1.

President Trump has praised her work at the State Department.

Nauret posted a cutesy tourist picture form the country, which was criticized as inappropriate given the reason for her visit was to investigate the murder of an American resident. Fox News executive Bill Shine was made a top communications adviser and John Bolton, also a contributor to the channel, is the White House national security adviser.

In its first two years, the Trump administration has pulled out of the U.N. scientific, educational and cultural organization UNESCO, the U.N. Human Rights Council and threatened to leave the International Postal Union.

The contrast between Haley and Nauert's respective credentials and diplomatic experience couldn't be more stark. "It is less clear that she has the experience to hammer out hard deals with China and Russian Federation over problems like Iran and North Korea".

But Trump has also used the United Nations to try to advance his foreign policy agenda on Iran and North Korea.

Nauert became an anchor on Fox & Friends, Trump's favourite television talkshow, where she helped air the network's recurrent themes about the threat of immigration, warning that immigrant children arriving in the U.S. could be bringing disease into the country, and that Sharia law was spreading in urban areas with Muslim populations.

But unlike White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, whose testy exchanges with reporters are routinely carried live, Nauert has enjoyed a civil relationship with the smaller State Department press corps as they travel the world together.
