Allen Grunes, an antitrust attorney who has worked with Delrahim, said that their conflict over the merger would be set aside if Barr is confirmed as attorney general.

Trump said he will nominate former Attorney General William Barr to fill the top job at the US Justice Department again, and that he will put forward State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as ambassador to the United Nations.

U.S. media report he has been critical of some aspects of that inquiry.

A Professor of Political Science at Drexel University, Dr. Bill Rosenberg, thinks the nomination is "positive" in terms of moving on from the acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, whom President Trump appointed after pushing out Jeff Sessions in November.

Trump called Barr "one of the most respected jurists in the country".

Nauert, who earlier this year had been considered a possible successor to White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, gained experience on diplomacy by working at the State Department, but she lacks the political and policy credentials of Haley, a former SC governor.

In the olden days of presidential appointments and nominations, the focus was justifiably on the nominees - their background, what their policy positions said about the role they would play in an administration and whether or not they would get confirmed.

Currently, Mr Barr is counsel at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington DC.

Trump mocked and belittled Sessions for more than a year, angry at Sessions' decision to recuse himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe because he had worked for Trump's election campaign.

The American Civil Liberties Union voiced concern about Trump's pick to lead the Justice Department, saying Barr "must commit to defending the rule of law and civil rights, not serving as a political arm of Trump's anti-constitutional agenda".

According to his bio, he served in the Central Intelligence Agency from 1973 to 1977. "He will be nominated for the US attorney general and hopefully, that process will go very quickly, and I think it will go very quickly", said Trump to reporters as he left the White House.

After leaving the Justice Department at the end of the Bush administration in January 1993, Barr served in a number of corporate positions at GTE, a telecom company, and Verizon Communications. Andrew Finch, the principal deputy assistant attorney general, attended the meeting and, in his affidavit, corroborated the account given by Delrahim.

After passing his senate confirmation hearing unanimously, he served as the 77th USA attorney general from 1991-1993.

In that role he was the boss of Robert Mueller, when Mr Mueller led the justice department's criminal division.

Mr Barr has voiced disapproval over some aspects of the inquiry but his views on the investigation's legitimacy remain unknown. As Wonkette explains, Barr is anxious that Mueller's investigative team is too partisan, he approves of Trump firing James Comey and he thinks the person who really needs to be investigated is Hillary Clinton.
