Trump Once Again Attacks Comey Over Congressional Testimony

Top Judiciary Committee Democrat Jerrold Nadler of NY said Friday - in a joint statement with Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top Democrat on the oversight panel - that Comey's testimony "offered us nothing new from his previous testimony on these same matters".

WASHINGTON- The Republican chairmen of the US House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight Committee on Saturday released transcripts of former FBI Director James Comey's testimony before lawmakers at a closed-door hearing on Friday.

He added it's "bizarre" that Comey thought the president of the United States may have committed a crime, but he didn't share that with anyone above him in the chain of command at the Justice Department, such as then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Comey reiterated to lawmakers that it was the 2016 encounter between Trump aide George Papadopoulos with a Russian intermediary in London that ignited the Russia investigation, rather than - as some Republicans have maintained - Democratic-funded opposition research compiled by a former British spy.

Republicans argue that department officials were biased against Donald Trump as they started an investigation into his campaign's ties to Russian Federation and cleared Democrat Hillary Clinton in the probe into her email use.

Comey (shown above left) has been a main person of interest since the beginning, for his involvement in a key investigation and his public comments.

Democrats have said the investigations by the House Judiciary and Oversight and Government Reform committees are merely a way to distract from and undermine special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

And he took umbrage with Trump's claim he is friends with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the the former FBI director who now leads the Russian Federation investigation.

Besides the questioning on Russia, Republicans lawmakers pressed Comey on the FBI's handling of an investigation into whether Clinton mishandled classified information on her private email server. He argued that Republicans would selectively leak details from the interview. Fittingly, a GOP member of the committee spoke to the media afterwards about how Comey wouldn't answer questions, at the direction of legal counsel.

Mr Trump fired Mr Comey in May 2017 after taking office in January of that year.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said government filings about Cohen "tell us nothing of value that wasn't already known".

Peter Strzok, a key investigator in both Comey-directed probes, was sacked earlier this year for sending text messages critical of Trump to an Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer he was having an affair with.

"This is a waste of time to start with", Nadler said outside the hearing room, according to the Associated Press.

CNN reported this week on the circumstances that prompted McCabe to open an obstruction investigation in the wake of Comey's firing even before Mueller was appointed less than two weeks later.

The transcript was released as part of a compromise struck by Comey and House Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Virginia, who had initially subpoenaed Comey to appear behind closed doors. "It will snap back, as will the rest of our institutions", Comey said.

Comey buckled over the weekend, announcing he would appear following assurances that a full transcript would get released and he could speak about what he had testified.
