Later that month at least 26 mostly Iranian fighters are killed by missiles fired on regime military positions, according to the Observatory.

Syrian air defences shot down Israeli missiles near the capital Damascus on Tuesday, local state media reported. The Syrians said they had downed a number of targets, but there were no reports of any Israeli planes being hit.

Israel Defense Forces, meanwhile, said an aerial defense system intercepted an anti-aircraft missile launched from Syria, according to a statement posted on the IDF official Twitter account.

He said the attack came from over Lebanese territory and came as "two airliners, not from Russian Federation, were preparing to land at the airports of Beirut and Damascus".

It said a number of missiles hit three targets, which it claimed are weapon depots that belong to the Lebanese Hezbollah group. One of the civilian airliners was redirected to a reserve airport in Khmeimim in western Syria.

Regime-run SANA news agency and the broadcaster both reported that air defence opened fire on "enemy targets" to "confront" them, without giving further details.

Fourteen bombs were destroyed by Syria's air defense system but two hit the logistic center of a Syrian army brigade wounding three servicemen, he added.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has repeatedly warned that he will not allow archenemy Iran to establish a permanent military presence in postwar Syria.

"We are not prepared to accept the Iranian military entrenchment in Syria, which is directed against us".

Syrian media said that most of the incoming missiles were intercepted by its defences, which were filmed firing overnight.

A US Defense Department source told Newsweek that the Israel Air Force air strike last night took place minutes after several Hezbollah leaders had boarded a plane bound for Iran.
