Massive internet outage impacting CenturyLink customers

The Cochise County Sheriff's Office said their CenturyLink system had crashed, and they were redirecting all 911 and administration lines to the Douglas Police Department.

There are four emergency call centers now operated by State Police in Mass. and residents using a cellphone to call 911 should call one of these centers instead, State Police advised. That's the area code for Western Washington State.

Some CenturyLink customers across the country were without the internet as outages stretched from NY to California, including in Kansas.

CNN has tried to reach CenturyLink for comment.

Officials in Jefferson Co. told 13 NEWS they were receiving reports of outages in the area.

CenturyLink customers have been experiencing outages since early Thursday. "While we can somewhat tailor the range of these alerts, due to our close proximity to OR there was some bleed over into that area".

"Our teams are continuing their efforts to resolve these issues and we will continue to provide updates throughout the day", the post said.

Seattle Police ask that you call either 206-583-2111 or 206-625-5011 in the event of an emergency if you are unable to get through with 911.

Jessica Rosenworcel, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, said via Twitter her agency needed to investigate.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai called the outage "completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling", in a statement Friday. "I've directed the Public Safety and Homeland Security bureau to immediately launch an investigation into the cause and impact of this outage".
