According to media reports, Singh's parents and brother now live in Fiji and are on their way to California.

Fiji born Police Officer Ronil Singh was shot and killed while conducting a vehicle stop at the intersection in Newman, Califonia. Surveillance footage also captured the suspect's vehicle, a grey Dodge Ram pickup with paper dealership plates, matching the description that Singh had called in.

Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson fought back tears as he described Singh, a 33-year-old with a newborn son, as an "American patriot".

Ronil Singh pulled over to make a traffic stop about 1 a.m.at Merced Street and Eucalyptus Avenue in Newman, a city of about 10,000 residents in Stanislaus County, KTLA sister station KTXL reported.

A Blue Alert, signaling that a violent criminal is being sought, has been issued for Stanislaus, Tuolumne, San Joaquin and Merced counties. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) told that "Suspect is considered armed and unsafe and may be in possession of a firearm".

Sgt. Tom Letras, a sheriff's spokesman, said authorities do not know the suspect's name.

It was a hard way to finish Boxing Day for the Singh family of Naitata, Navua after receiving news of their son, Ronil Singh being shot in the line of duty in California.

California Governor Edmund Brown extended his condolences to Mr Singh's wife, their young son and colleagues.

"Our hearts are with the entire community of Newman and law enforcement officers who risk their lives to protect and serve the people of California", Governor Jerry Brown said in a statement.

His family migrated to the U.S. in 2002.

The Stanislaus Sworn Deputies Association established a memorial fund for Singh.
