Brazil's President-elect Jair Bolsonaro says that on taking office, he will issue a decree guaranteeing citizens without a criminal history the ability to possess firearms.

The Israeli leader met with the president-elect at Fort Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro. "Our cooperation will help the citizens of both countries in economy, technology and military areas and will help strengthen the global status of Israel", Netanyahu said after the meeting with Bolsonaro, as quoted by his office in the statement.

"This is another expression of the fact that Israel is a rising world power", he added. He said that for his country to overcome obstacles, "we need good allies, good friends, good brothers, like Benjamin Netanyahu". He also spoke of cooperation in military and agriculture matters.

"We also welcome President-elect Bolsonaro's comments regarding moving the Brazilian embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in support of Israel's sovereign right to have its capital of Jerusalem recognized by nations around the world". It was the first-ever visit to Brazil by an Israeli prime minister.

The two men's first interaction was at lunch in Copacabana Fort.

Netanyahu is due to meet Bolsonaro on Friday afternoon in Rio de Janeiro, the official said on condition of anonymity. "We want more people to partner with Israel, as well as with us".

Under Bolsonaro, Becher said, this too will change for the better: "There is a lot of space for improvement, and we will see an increase in tourism, trade, economics, investment, and of course the big change will be at the United Nations".

The much-awaited trip marks the end of an era of strained ties between Brazil and the Jewish state. "Israel is a sovereign state and we shall duly respect that", Bolsonaro wrote at the time on Twitter.

Bolsonaro has previously said that Palestine is not a state and therefore there should be no embassy there. Nearly 64 percent of the population voted against the measure.

"The situation is similar to [US President Donald] Trump's declaration" that he planned to move the US embassy in December of 2017, the source said. However, it failed to pass as it fell short of the needed two-third majority.

Other VIPs who will be there include Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Netanyahu's son, Yair Netanyahu, stirred controversy on Thursday when it was announced he would also travel to Brazil on a separate flight.

Becher, in an interview with The Israel Project, said that Brazil's vote in the UN General Assembly earlier this month in favor of Israel on a resolution condemning Hamas was historic.

"The visit will bring an important political message: a turnaround in Israel's relations with the largest country in Latin America".

"What is right between us will be very good for Brazilians and Israelis", he said.

Bolsonaro, 63, who won a run-off election on Sunday, has outraged many with his overtly misogynistic, homophobic and racist rhetoric. Moreover, Bolsonaro conferred Brazil's National Order of Merit on Netanyahu.
