The good news, though, is the Rams aren't exactly keen to stopping the run.

Gurley was ruled out of Sunday's game by the Rams on Friday, a change from last week when they held out hope until gameday that their star running back could play through a knee injury.

Gurley is the NFL's second-leading rusher with 1,251 yards, and he leads the league with 21 touchdowns.

The Rams will have to clinch a first-round bye without him, and give their star back yet another week to rest.

Gurley (knee) did not participate in a walkthrough Wednesday, but McVay said a decision on his status for Sunday's game probably would not come down to a pregame workout in the "the last hour and a half" as it did last week at Arizona.

The whole reason why the Rams brought Anderson on board in the first place was for this exact situation since they knew there was some uncertainty with Gurley dealing with his knee inflammation. "Some days you wake up feeling much better".

One of those individual players to watch in Week 17 when the 49ers visit L.A.is undrafted rookie running back Jeff Wilson, who is a shoo-in to get the start with No. 1 tailback Matt Breida sidelined with an ankle injury. While Gurley wasn't ready to declare himself out for another week when he spoke to the media Thursday night, the Rams chose to be careful.

But the Rams still have something to play for on Sunday. "Obviously, kind of went back in the game and played".

The 49ers still won't be expected to beat the Rams even with Gurley out, but his absence does give the 49ers a better shot. "I mean, you'd prefer for him to practice, but it wouldn't be something that if he doesn't practice, then there's definitely no chance he plays". Anderson, whom they had signed only five days earlier. He made his Rams debut last week and rushed for 167 yards on 20 carries.
