The Panthers will start their third quarterback in three weeks on Sunday.

Quarterback Taylor Heinicke has been placed on injured reserve with a left elbow injury following his first National Football League start, so the Panthers have brought back the man he beat out in the summer for the backup job.

In a corresponding move, the Panthers signed Garrett Gilbert to back up Allen.

Carolina Panthers' Kyle Allen warms up before an NFL football game against the Atlanta Falcons in Charlotte, N.C., Sunday, Dec. 23, 2018.

Bridgewater completed 28 of 38 passes for 316 yards in the preseason, with two touchdowns and an interception. The team is now 6-9 this season. The team does not want to activate Cam Newton, who is struggling with a shoulder injury, in Week 17.

Bridgewater's last start came for the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round of the playoffs after the 2015 season, and he drove the Vikings into position for a game-winning field goal attempt that Blair Walsh missed. New Orleans clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC, earning a first round bye.
