Pompeo discusses Syria troop withdrawal with Netanyahu

The prime minister told the press ahead of the meeting-held in Brazil's capital after the inauguration of the country's new president, Jair Bolsonaro-the main topics of discussion was to be with the withdrawal of USA troops from Syria and Iranian attempts to establish a military presence in the war-torn country.

Brazil's newly inaugurated president issued an executive order on Wednesday making the Ministry of Agriculture responsible for deciding on lands claimed by Indigenous peoples, in a victory for agribusiness that will likely enrage environmentalists.

Bolsonaro has now made a decision to move Indigenous affairs agency FUNAI into a new ministry for family, women and human rights.

Critics of the change have described it as a "catastrophe" for Brazil's 900,000 Indigenous people, who could face total annihilation.

Brazil is home to about 100 uncontacted Indigenous tribes, the most in the world, and their protection from outsiders is crucial to their survival.

In his first public speech wearing the presidential sash, Boslonaro said Brazil will "start to free itself of socialism" and "political correctness", breaking with policies brought in under decades of leftist rule.

For the former army captain, the New Year's Day inauguration was the culmination of a journey from a marginalised and even ridiculed congressmen to a leader who many Brazilians hope can combat endemic corruption.

Tuesday's festivities in the capital of Brasilia began with a motorcade procession along the main road leading to Congress and other government buildings.

One promise Bolsonaro made on the campaign trail was to move the Brazilian embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, following Trump's May decision to do the same.

The precautions were more stringent than in years past, in part because Bolsonaro survived a stabbing attack by a mentally unstable man when he was campaigning for the presidency in September.

"It's an indescribable emotion to be here looking at our President taking power", Marcia Freitas said from among the crowd.

Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said the US remains committed to Israel's security and stability in the broader Middle East after President Donald Trump provoked concerns of new chaos when he abruptly ordered USA troops out of Syria.

"Congratulations to President @jairbolsonaro who just made a great inauguration speech", the USA president tweeted.

Mr Bolsonaro then read a short speech that included numerous far-right positions he staked out during the campaign.
