Co Armagh EuroMillions winners reveal they never wanted to go public

FRANCES and Patrick Connolly, who scooped a £115 million EuroMillions jackpot on New Year's Day have pledged to help a community football club in their former home town.

Draw operator Camelot said that the winners came forward with their winning ticket yesterday.

The couple, from Co Armagh, appeared at a news conference at the luxury Culloden Hotel in Co Down on Friday after becoming the fourth biggest United Kingdom lottery winners in history. "The pleasure for me is going to be seeing their faces".

The couple struggled to take it in, even after receiving an email telling them they had won.

Rather than embark on a wild shopping spree, the couple who have three daughters and three grandchildren, have made a decision to share their wealth with their friends and loved ones.

If you are one of the 50 closest friends and family of Frances and Patrick Connolly, there may be good news ahead.

Her husband said the win felt "unreal" and checked several websites to verify it.

He said his expertise was in manufacturing and he hoped to create more jobs using part of their fortune.

The couple spent 25 years working in Hartlepool and recently returned to a rented property in Moira, Co Down.

Mr Connolly is a businessman who once ran his own firm.

The couple said while they would have preferred to have kept the win silent, there were just too many people they wanted to share the win with to have kept it a secret.

Patrick, 54, said that after checking their numbers; "We really didn't know what to do or how to react and we didn't sleep a wink that night".

She said that while they had often speculated about what they would do if they won the lottery, a win this size was not something they had thought about.

"At the minute there are about 50 people [on the list.] It's going to be so much fun giving it away", she said.

Noting her leg injury, she indicated a huge mansion was not on the cards.

He had no idea how much money Mr and Mrs Connolly were planning to give but added that there was plenty of scope to spend it.

Asked about hiring a bodyguard, she joked: "I've never met anybody I couldn't take down myself, to be fair". "I think we will be putting this on the agenda", he said.

Despite this, their largest ever win before the jackpot was £2.60.
