"I found out last night", said Hutchinson, who made 30 saves, including 18 in the first period.

Leafs backup Garret Sparks is also out after he was put in concussion protocol Wednesday when he was hit in the mask with a puck during practice.

The Wild coach's lovely but very spunky mum vowed to leave Scotiabank Arena if the Wild "started losing", so naturally Mitch Marner made a decision to tie a Maple Leafs franchise record that was set way back in 1932 - the year before Mrs. Boudreau was born - by delivering the Wild a deficit instants into Thursday's kids' day matinee.

Hutchinson, who lists Felix Potvin as his favourite all-time Leafs netminder, will get another shot when Toronto hosts the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday.

To pad their goalie roster, the Maple Leafs recalled Michael Hutchinson and Kasimir Kaskisuo from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL.

Admitting his goaltending wasn't where it needed to be against the Islanders and Wild, head coach Mike Babcock has his sights affixed on the NHL-leading Lightning, knowing full well where the path to a Stanley Cup goes through. "We figured it was time to shut it down and make sure we didn't beat around the bush anymore".

Is acquiring another goalie a priority, considering Sparks' injury? "You would like to have a tree in your backyard and you just pick them off, but there is none of that".

The Leafs also placed their starting goaltender Frederik Andersen, who had missed their last three games with a groin injury, on injured reserve.

"You've got to learn how to win all kinds of games", Babcock said. "Something I played through in December a little bit and had to try to manage".

"The Christmas break didn't respond the way we hoped", said the 29-year-old.

"You want to be close to your full potential and feeling as close to 100% as possible to be at the top of your level like the first two months of the season".

As the season goes along there will be many storylines to follow like whether William Nylander gets back on track and whether the team makes a deal at the deadline for a defenceman.

Hutchinson has only been with the organization since Saturday following a trade with the Florida Panthers for a fifth-round draft pick in 2020 as an insurance policy after the Leafs lost both Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers before the season.

"Something I have been doing my whole career", Hutchinson said of having to prove himself.

"You have to make sure you do your rehab the right way", he said. "It's something that you just have to embrace". You have to really focus on the stuff that you can control.

The Leafs pulled Hutchinson with 2:45 left on the clock, but were unable to get anything past the Wild netminder, including a chance that dribbled off the post in the dying seconds.
