Golden State was vocal about wanting him back but ultimately declined to match Cleveland's offer.

Patrick McCaw may cost the Cleveland Cavaliers their projected top pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

The Warriors have now asked the National Basketball Association to investigate the Cleveland's signing of McCaw, with some speculation that Cavs merely signed McCaw to spite Golden State, the team that beat Cleveland in the finals three of the last four years.

A person with knowledge of the matter spoke Tuesday with The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because details of the investigation have not been revealed publicly.

How long the league's review will take has not been determined, nor is it clear what the Warriors might be seeking.

28 when McCaw signed an offer sheet for two years and $6 million with the Cavs, none of it guaranteed.

McCaw was a restricted free agent of the Golden State Warriors who pretty clearly did not want to play for the team. "I don't know that there's been a totally non-guaranteed offer sheet before".

This is just the start of the Cavs' alibi for signing McCaw and then waiving him Sunday, a day before they would have had to pay him $3 million for the season. Other teams are also reportedly interested in signing him, having deferred before when he was restricted.

Some have speculated the Cavaliers made the moves to spite the franchise that beat them in three of the past four NBA Finals.
