Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira will meet with Jose Mourinho in the coming days to discuss the ex-Manchester United coach's conditions to take charge at the club, according to Portuguese daily A Bola.

As reported earlier, 55-year-old Mourinho has been heading Manchester United since 2016.

Real Madrid, who the Portuguese coached from 2010-2013, have been heavily linked with a move to bring Mourinho back to the Bernabeu.

United are said to have paid the out of job boss a sum of £15 million as compensation package last month, allowing him to return to management when he sees fit.

When a professional returns or is invited to return to a club it is a tremendous honour.

"I always learned that when you leave a club, you do not talk", he told CMTV this week.

'When you leave a club, you do not wash dirty clothes, when you leave a club, you do not seek to, at least publicly, do any kind of criticism, it's an ended chapter and that's how I always did it'.

Mourinho was linked with a spectacular return to his native Portugal this week as reports emerged that Benfica were ready to offer a contract to the former Porto boss.

Madrid are having a particularly bad time at the moment, with interim manager Santiago Solari struggling to illicit the same response that Zinedine Zidane did when he was promoted from youth coach to senior manager, and president Florentino Perez is said to be keen to install an authoritarian like Mourinho to return the discipline to a listless squad.

It was never going to take long for Mourinho to find a new job, but it has to be said that United's decision to sack him was the right one.

It was suggested that Mourinho, whose very first managerial role came at Benfica, could head back to Portugal, but he insists that will not be the case.

They say you can't keep a good man down, so many will be wondering what the hell Jose Mourinho does to be able to bounce back every time.

Mourinho added: "The best thing for Benfica is to support Bruno [Lage] and think about the future calmly".
