"It is a tremendous honour to be named Ryder Cup Captain and I am relishing the next 20 months as we work towards Whistling Straits and Europe's defense of the trophy".

And after Thomas Bjorn led Europe to victory last October those on the winning the European Team, including Rory Mcllroy and Justin Rose, have been out-spoken in declaring they want "continuation" in the naming of the 2020 European Captain.

In the least surprising news of 2019 thus far, Padraig Harrington was named captain for the 2020 European Ryder Cup team. "In light of the beating suffered by Darren Clarke in Minnesota in 2016, he knows that he faces ominous odds on a tricked-up links course that will be created to suit the Americans" longest hitters.

Despite considerable European success, Harrington said 2020 is a new match, a new venue, and the pressure to continue Europe's winning ways is real.

"You could look at this being a natural progression, you move on from player, to vice-captain to captain but it's not something I take on without a certain amount of trepidation". They want to see what I have to give, which is nice.

And it hasn't taken players long to send their congratulations to the six-time appearance maker.

Harrington has been encouraged by what he said was the "unanimous" support of Europe's players. "I am very much looking forward to taking on this role". But I think that's a road you should not go down.

The 47-year-old has not won a European Tour title since his Portugal Masters triumph in 2016 but came close at the Czech Masters last August, finishing second in what was his best performance of the season.

"It does make my job easier that I feel I have the confidence of the players", Harrington added.

"It's obviously great for Ireland, and there's no doubt that Padraig Harrington is the best man for the job on this occasion", McGinley told Sky Sports. "Good guy. Tough. Not a man to underestimate".

Asked if he would be willing to do something similar, Harrington replied with a smile: "You know, we're all about continuity on the European Tour".

The captain has so much more to think about, and the assistant captains play a big part in the decision-making process. He's tough but very straight.

Pavard played in six of France's seven games at the World Cup finals, only missing their final group game against Denmark, and he scored his first worldwide goal in the last-16 clash with Argentina. "But there's no messing from his side".
