US congresswoman Gabbard, who met Syria's Assad, says will run for president

Asked previous year whether she would still consider running if Senator Sanders ran, Ms Gabbard said Senator Sanders is a friend and she did not know what his plans were.

"When we stand together, united by our love for each other and for our country, there is no challenge we can not overcome", Rep. Gabbard tweeted on Friday afternoon. "Will you join me?" she asked on Twitter.

Tulsi Gabbard, the Iraq war veteran and Democratic US representative for Hawaii, has made a decision to run for the White House in the next election.

UPDATE (7 p.m. HST) - "Earlier tonight I spoke with my friend Van Jones about the challenges we face and the future of our country", Rep. Gabbard wrote in a campaign email.

In an interview with CNN, Ms Gabbard said she would be formally announcing her candidacy within the next week.

But the main reason I'm running has to do with an issue that is central to the rest-war and peace. "I look forward to being able to get into this and to talk about it in depth when we make our announcement", which will come within the next week, Gabbard said. "When we stand together, united by our love for each other and for our country, there is no challenge we can not overcome".

The US senator Elizabeth Warren, of MA, on 31 December announced she had formed an exploratory committee for a presidential run in what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field before the November 2020 presidential election.

Hawaii Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard is running for President in 2020.

Gabbard is joining what is expected to be a crowded Democratic field. Today, working families across our state and country are missing paychecks and facing financial crisis.

Minutes after Gabbard's announcement, Republicans released a "cheat sheet" about the Hawaii congresswoman dubbing her "Assad's mouthpiece in Washington". Bernie Sanders are all weighing their own presidential bids and are expected to announce decisions in the upcoming weeks. Gabbard moved to Hawaii when she was two and embraced Hinduism as a teenager and is well-versed in the scriptures, PTI reported.

"I stepped down from the legislature where I served, and headed to a war zone", Gabbard recalled at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. She had been a force in Hawaii politics for years, making news by becoming the youngest person - just 21 at the time - ever elected to the state legislature.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace", said Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran and now serving on the House Foreign Affairs Committee. "I walked out thinking that there may be some opportunity to work with this Administration to shift our foreign policy in a more positive, less destructive direction", she said, and then paused. Her participation in the race will raise the profile of some important issues, for which libertarians should be glad.
