Bungie Breaks Up with Activision, Keeping Rights to Destiny

While Bungie retained full creative control of the IP in their contract - hypothetically, at least - Activision will have been in control of the release schedule and financial strategy of the franchise until now.

Taking on the challenge of publishing Destiny will be a new experience for Bungie, which will also find itself without a fairly convenient scapegoat. The original story follows below.

Bungie and Activision have chose to go their separate ways, with Bungie retaining control of the crown jewel in its own empire (and the publishing rights).

"We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny", Bungie said in a blog post today.

Bungie made a statement on its website that the two sides are working on a transition plan for Activision to transfer Destiny publishing rights to Bungie.

"With Forsaken, we've learned, and listened, and leaned in to what we believe our players want from a great Destiny experience". It would also like to assure players that it will deliver on the current Destiny road map, so there's no need to worry about this breaking up the flow of your game.

When it comes to the future, we know Bungie has at least two more seasonal Forsaken expansions which will take fans right up until the end of August 2019. We hope you'll join us there. No longer are Activision's tendrils clasping around their monetization plans such as throwing in microtransactions on top of expansions on top of fully-priced games.

All eyes will be on Activision Blizzard Inc to see if they can manage a profit this year with less IP than before.

In the intervening years, the rise of online games that are constantly updated has drastically changed the industry landscape, allowing game developers to sell their products straight to players without an intermediary publisher.

Activision tweeted a statement similar to but much more concise than Bungie's. "Excited to see how they continue to grow and evolve Destiny".

The Destiny universe is going to get a major shakeup - at least on the business side of things.
