Kuchar claims Sony Open title

The four-time Ryder Cup team member won a bronze medal for the U.S. at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Since then, Conners has Monday qualified for both the Mayakoba Golf Classic and last week's Sony Open.

"It was odd", the 37-year-old American told Golf Channel at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, where he trailed leader Matt Kuchar by four shots.

"It was not at all what I was looking for", Kuchar told Golf Channel of his start.

The victory snapped a four-year winless drought for Kuchar, a stretch that lasted more than 1,600 days and spanned 118 starts on tour, the longest such stretch of his career. He also had a 126 in Las Vegas a decade ago and wound up as runner-up.

Kuchar seized control late in the round with back-to-back birdie putts, the second one on No. 16 prompting a rare show of emotion with a fist pump.

Bryson DeChambeau had a 63 and led a large pack at 11-under 199, seven shots out of the lead for a slim chance at winning unless the leaders come back to the field.

"I've got gray hair, " he said with a laugh. "It's a cycle of whether it's good or bad that you have this quest to continue to play, to improve, to fix, whatever it is".

Marc Leishman (T3): It was a great two weeks in Hawaii for Leishman, too.

Shugo Imahira is six shots off the pace after carding a 3-under 67.

The Warrnambool native finished in a share of 3rd with Chez Reavie, Corey Connors and Hudson Swafford. The Saitama native fell three places down the leaderboard following his opening round of 65.

The nine-time tour victor was flawless on the front nine. "I want to do my best to aim for a top-10 finish".

Kuchar's two-shot lead going into the final round was gone in four holes, and when he missed the green on No. 5 with a wedge, he was trailing for the first time all weekend.

He made the putt, one of several key moments the rest of the way.

No one had a more memorable round than Reavie. Putnam went first and it rolled out to 2 inches for birdie.

Even if you discount last week, as he was never really in with any chance of winning, he's already contended strongly three times on the PGA Tour and if he keeps knocking on the door it will open soon enough.

"It was on a good line, and that was the only time it crossed my mind - 'Wow, could we make another one?' " he said.

"I anticipate needing another good score tomorrow, " Kuchar said. "It's always a surprise when it disappears".

He opened with a birdie on the par-four first hole and carded another birdie just three holes later. "If it's like today, it's going to be scorable".

Cink made nine birdies in his round of 62. Monday qualifiers are tough and few players can qualify with anything like regularity that way. He also earned 500 FedEx Cup points to take over the No. 2 spot behind Xander Schauffele, who earned his second victory of the season last week. He then reeled off two more over the first three holes after making the turn to regain the lead.
