'The Batman': Matt Reeves and Warner Bros Want a "Familiar Face"

Affleck seemed to confirm the news via twitter, retweeting Deadline's report, and writing, "Excited for #TheBatman in Summer 2021 and to see [Matt Reeves'] vision come to life". It's been rumored that he was on his way out for a while, so this doesn't come as a huge surprise. As per a report by Deadline, Affleck has passed on the baton to someone "younger".

Ben had initially been attached to both star in and direct "The Batman", but opted to step down from his role behind the camera in 2017.

It feels like The Batman (or whatever this movie ends up ultimately being called) is still a ways off in DC's ever-fluctuating, ever-expanding plans for its cinematic slate. After signing on to play the role in August 2013, Affleck only starred in two movies-Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League-and had a brief cameo in Suicide Squad.

Recently, Warner Bros has been pouring its time and energy into projects with female leads (such as the hugely successful Wonder Woman), lesser-known superheros such as Aquaman or the anti-heroes found in Suicide Squad. Christian Bale was in his early 30s when he donned the cape and cowl in Batman Begins, but rumors point to Matt Reeves' wanting someone in their early 20s.

"I have loved the Batman story since I was a child", he said when his involvement was announced. Hopefully, we'll get answers to all these by year's end.

The first piece of news follows on from an interview Reeves gave saying believed the film would be released in 2021.

Affleck's Batman also appeared in 2016's "Suicide Squad", a critical dud that felt only half-completed, yet - largely buoyed by Margot Robbie's inspired turn as Harley Quinn - grossed almost $750 million worldwide on a $175 million budget. "The comics have a history of that", he said. Ben Affleck was already a big 6'4, and once he bulked up to play Batman, he was just a pure wall of muscle and menace. A relative unknown? Will we have to watch Thomas and Martha Wayne get murdered for the ten-thousandth time on film?

The Batman is scheduled to premiere in theaters on June 25, 2021.
