Trump announced in his State of the Union address that the summit will take place February 27-28. "Our hostages have come home, nuclear testing has stopped, and there has not been a missile launch in 15 months". He added that his "relationship with Kim Jong Un is a good one". "I have a message for Chairman Kim Jong Un: President Trump believes your country can replicate this path".

As a single-party communist state, Vietnam boasts tight political control and an efficient security apparatus, and successfully hosted the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in the central coastal city of Da Nang and the regional edition of the World Economic Forum past year in the capital, Hanoi.

The first Trump-Kim summit was held in Singapore in June 2018, but negotiations failed to make much headway owing to disagreements on the concept of denuclearization.

The Singapore summit yielded a vague commitment from Kim to work toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, where USA troops have been stationed since the 1950-53 Korean War.

Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne said that enforcing worldwide sanctions against North Korea is important in assuring Pyongyang that "the world is equally committed" to its denuclearization.

Commenters on one site said Kim could even take inspiration from the country's north and south reunifying after the war.

During the 40-minute meeting, Chung and Biegun exchanged views on what Seoul and Washington have to do together going forward, ahead of working-level talks between the United States and the North.

Trump highlighted his achievements in ongoing nuclear diplomacy with North Korea.

A source at Danang airport said four USA military V-22 "Osprey" aircraft flew from Japan's Okinawa island and landed in the coastal city on Tuesday evening.

"Great nations do not fight endless wars", Trump said, after his controversial orders to pull all United States troops out of Syria and half of the 14,000-strong force in Afghanistan.

Washington is also keen to show off Vietnam's economic success story, touted by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo during a visit to the country past year.

Trump voiced guarded hope that intensifying negotiations with Afghanistan's Taliban would bring for a "possible political solution" to end the longest-ever United States war.

In the US view, North Korea has yet to take concrete steps to give up its nuclear weapons.

The three-year Korean War ended with an armistice that left the two Koreas technically still at war.

Trump made the announcement during his annual State of the Union address to Congress on Tuesday. North Korea has an embassy in Hanoi and reports suggest that Kim Jong Un is interested in following Vietnam's economic and political example.
