Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Democratic Senator Ed Markey on Thursday laid out the goals of a Green New Deal to transform the United States economy to combat climate change while creating thousands of jobs in renewable energy.

The reaction on Twitter was unrestrained in its criticism, while other simply poked fun at Ocasio-Cortez's plan. Use of wind and solar power would be dramatically increased under the plan.

Climate change is a passionate cause for Ocasio-Cortez.

The resolution so far has 64 House co-sponsors and nine Senate sponsors - four of whom are Democratic presidential hopefuls for 2020. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Cory Booker (D-N.J.).

The Republican Study Committee pointed out the dichotomy Thursday, shortly after the New York Democrat launched her sweeping environmental plan aimed at achieving zero-net greenhouse-gas emissions in 10 years.

The proposals may once have been dismissed out of hand, and Pelosi's comments indicate the proposal will face skepticism from not just Republicans, but also a number of Democrats.

"Even the solutions that we have considered big and bold are nowhere near the scale of the actual problem that climate change presents to us", she told NPR's "Morning Edition" in an interview that aired Thursday.

After Democrats won the House majority in November, Ocasio-Cortez emerged as an outspoken advocate for combating climate change and pushed for the select committee to be focused on formulating a Green New Deal that would move the country toward 100 percent renewable electricity over the next 10 years. Earlier Thursday, progressive lawmakers published an outline of the proposal which they claim is created to solve "climate change" and "systemic injustice" by reducing "pollution and greenhouse gas emissions" to meet "100 percent of the power demand" through "clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources".

While calling for the elimination of pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture, transportation, manufacturing and construction, the resolution contains no mention of bans or regulation, as other plans have described.

Florida Rep. Kathy Castor will chair the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis.

An overview document released Tuesday by Ocasio-Cortez's office, which contains numerous typos, laid out what the Green New Deal sets out to do.

President Donald Trump has scrapped Obama's plan, which imposed emissions limits on coal-fired power plants, as a job-killer. "I think that all great American programs, everything from the Great Society to the New Deal, started with a vision for our future, and I don't consider that to be a dismissive term".

"They will not accept vague endorsements", he said. Will all of the expertise that goes into a Green New Deal eventually include proofreaders?

"The difference between 2009 and today is the movement that has now been built", he said.
