BBC confirms the return of Frozen Planet and Planet Earth

Hot on the heels of the acclaimed docuseries Dynasties, BBC America has announced two more awe-inspiring nature documentaries: Frozen Planet II and Planet Earth III.

It's also been revealed the 92-year-old has not yet signed a contract for the upcoming documentaries.

"It's over 200m people, it's urgent, it's instantaneous", he explained. "And it stays there for months, so it can get an even bigger audience through word of mouth".

America will serve up a third installment of its popular "Planet Earth" series in 2022 after setting a five-year extension with BBC Studios for high-end natural history programming.

Attenborough, who is synonymous with the BBC's natural history output, has already agreed to provide the voiceover for a forthcoming Netflix series named Our Planet which is due to be released in April and has involved 600 crew members filming for four years around the world.

Additionally, the new series is planning on reflecting the harsh new realities of the natural world, meaning it will not shy away from highlighting the various challenges that animals and plants around the globe face in Earth's changing natural landscapes.

"One of the things we're most proud of at BBC America is that we've established the network as the USA destination for the very best nature programming on the planet, from the BBC's award-winning natural history unit", said Sarah Barnett, president of entertainment networks for AMC Networks.

The announcement comes after senior staff left the BBC's Natural History Unit, lured to the commercial sector by the prospect of working for rapidly-growing streaming services, which can offer bigger budgets.

"Sir David is not now attached to the programmes, but the BBC hopes that he will be able to provide narrations".

The eight-part series - which will air in 2022 - will be the last in the Planet Earth set, the broadcaster announced.
