European roundup: Dortmund waste three-goal lead in draw with Hoffenheim

Dortmund remains atop the Bundesliga table with 50 points despite Saturday's stunning collapse but could see its lead over second-placed Bayern Munich shrink to five points if the six-time defending champions defeat Schalke.

First captain Marco Reus injured his thigh and then coach Lucien Favre was forced to miss Saturday's Bundesliga home game with Hoffenheim with illness.

The 18-year-old looked to have scored a fortuitous opener when the ball bounced off him and into Hoffenheim's net with 11 minutes gone, but the video assistant referee spotted the ball had hit his upper arm. Especially because Jadon Sancho plays for Dortmund and all eyes will be on him.

Sancho was denied a second by Oliver Baumann but Goetze prodded home the rebound before the break.

The England worldwide then set up Mario Götze for Dortmund's second goal just before half-time and combined with Götze to set up Raphaël Guerreiro for an easy tap-in in the 66th minute.

Hoffenheim didn't give up, however.

Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho has given Chelsea fans a taste of what they'll be getting in the shape of new signing Christian Pulisic. Belfodil equalized with his second goal in the 87th. "When you lead 3-0 at home and then you play a 3-3 then it obviously is extremely bitter", Goetze told reporters. In addition, he also scored against Bayer Leverkusen last season.

Dortmund travel to Wembley to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the last-16 Champions League tie on Wednesday, while the Blades host fellow promotion contenders Middlesbrough.

The Poland striker's 119th Bundesliga goal for Bayern also lifted him to joint third in the club's all-time league scorers list, level with Roland Wohlfarth.

Serge Gnabry sealed Bayern's win before the hour-mark after Lewandowski inadvertently set him up with a bicycle kick. Dortmund at least temporarily extended their lead to eight points because the flawless season record at home of second-placed Borussia Moenchengladbach ended in a 3-0 defeat against Hertha Berlin. Gladbach had previously won all nine of its home games this season. They also drew their last league match, 1-1 at Eintracht Frankfurt.
