Many U.S. airlines say they're in the process of updating their booking systems in order to allow for non-binary customers to use pronouns other than "male" or "female".

"As part of our commitment to inclusion, we want to ensure all of our customers feel comfortable and welcome no matter how they self-identify, which is why we will begin offering our customers the ability to select the gender with which they most closely identify during the booking process", United Airlines released in a statement. The latest change will arrive at most major airlines within the United States. The airlines will offer new options as a way to "be more inclusive" when it comes to their diverse group of travelers.

The airlines says "unspecified" and "undisclosed" gender options will be available in the next few weeks in addition to the options "male" and "female".

The move was praised by advocacy groups for transgender people.

'We certainly have a very diverse customer base.

CNBC is reporting that Airlines for America, an industry group that represents some of the largest USA carriers, including American Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Alaska Airlines, and the International Air Transport Association, which represents most of the world's airlines, recently approved standards for nonbinary passenger identification.

Major airlines in the USA are planning to add a new gender option for their customers when buying tickets. They will also have the option of picking "Mx." as a title. OR started to let their residents choose to identify as neither male nor female on licenses in 2017.

The A4A and the IATA said the change will enable airlines to comply with requirements under US and foreign laws that passenger information must be in line with a person's ID information used for travel.

Those changes led the National Center for Transgender Equality and Human Rights Campaign to recommend that transgender people carry a second identification such as a passport that shows their sex as it appears on their ticket.

Implementation of the new gender options is up to each individual carrier, according to A4A.
