Is it a phone, a tablet - or both?

And holy moly does it look superior than Samsung's foldable phone in every way. "On all the benchmarks you can see the performance, the speed is the fastest for 5G in the world", said Richard Yu, head of Huawei's consumer business group. There is no headphone jack on the phone, like the Galaxy Fold.

Open and close. Open and close. These then unfold to create an eight-inch tablet display.

"The Mate X also boasts a 4500 mAh battery with "Supercharge" support, charging the device from 0% to 85% in just 30 minutes, catering to today's media-heavy users".

The Mate X offers a front-facing 5.6-inch screen with a resolution of 2480 x 1148 and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio.

Look, no big ugly bezels! In Canadian dollars, 2299 euro works out to a whopping $3425 CAD as of writing, which is about $800 CAD more than the Galaxy Fold.

Sadly, neither the Mate X offers a headphone jack, nor the Samsung Galaxy Fold.

Before we delve into the internal specifications, you should know that Huawei has done everything in its power to prevent the Mate X from getting bulky.

The program that will be part of the marketing advertisement for the new phones will highlight that a person who shares his or her power with others will one day be able to receive the same favor form a person who is into the promotion of power sharing. It's hard to say until we have proper dimensions for other foldable phones. This has been made possible by the Falcon Wing design, a patented 100-component hinge mechanism.

Besides the larger displays, the Mate X also sports a "grip bar". However there is visibly a triple camera layout and it uses Leica lenses similar to the Mate 20 Pro.

The grip bar is also an ergonomic way to, well, firmly grip the Mate X with one hand.

We were lucky enough to get a small demonstration of the Mate X and were impressed with what we saw.

Alongside the chip, Huawei has added its own Balong 5000 5G modem to allow maximum performance by pairing it with 7nm chips. Huawei reckons a 1GB movie will take around three seconds to download on this device over 5G.

The Huawei Mate X will be released in the second half of the year and cost an "eyebrow-raising" $2600. "The barriers in the USA are just getting more hard".

Huawei is touting its uncompromised experience with this device, since there's no notch and cutout on the display. However, as great as the screens are, it still faces the same challenges all foldable phones need to overcome.

On paper, Huawei has made something special with the Mate X. It's made sure that this foldable phone goes beyond the gimmick, packing in some serious camera tech and making sure both variants of the device have a reason to exist. Phone makers still face a huge uphill battle convincing people that foldable phones will be worth buying.
