His new, superseding deal calls for a $2 million signing bonus and keeps the $6 million salary this year.

Hicks, 29, was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2019 season.

"I thought it was a fair deal for both sides", Hicks said, according to MLB.com's Bryan Hoch. Given the slow pace of free agency and the disappointing deals that many middle-tier free agents have taken over the past two seasons, Hicks could be the first of multiple would-be free agents to go this route. Pollock didn't sign his five-year, $60 million deal with the Dodgers until late January.

No no-trade clause, but Hicks gets a $1M assignment bonus if traded.

"This is something we've been working on for a while", said Hicks. "And I just want to keep adding to it and do whatever I can to make that position still a great position".

The Yankees originally acquired Hicks from the Twins in a one-for-one trade involving catcher John Ryan Murphy back in November 2015. He immediately brought top-notch defense to the team and has improved as a hitter since arriving in the Big Apple.

Hicks, 29, has broken out as one of the best center fielders in Major League Baseball the last two years - only Mike Trout (+16.8 WAR) and Lorenzo Cain (+12.2 WAR) have been more valuable than Hicks (+8.6 WAR) in center the last two seasons - hitting.255/.368/.470 (127 wRC+) with 42 homers to go with strong defense and baserunning. But Hicks' 27 homers were the most by a switch-hitting center fielder since Beltran hit the same amount in 2008.

"There was a lot of people questioning if he'd ever cross into being the player that his draft card said he was capable of being", Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said.

With Hicks's deal in place, NY is expected to focus on extending reliever Dellin Betances, per Fancred's Jon Heyman.
