People celebrate before the release of Indian Air Force pilot, who was captured by Pakistan on Wednesday, in a street in Ahmedabad, India, March 1, 2019.

As Pakistan prepared to hand over the captured Indian pilot, blistering cross-border attacks across the disputed Himalayan Kashmir region continued for a fourth straight day, even as the two nuclear-armed neighbours seek to defuse the most serious confrontation in two decades.

An Indian defence official said the pilot was then taken for medical checks. India's MiG-21 fighter upgraded by Russian Federation possesses combat capabilities identical to those of the F-16 of Pakistan's Air Force, the editor-in-chief of National Defense magazine, Igor Korotchenko, said about recent clashes involving these planes.

On Feb 27, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) after striking down two Indian fighter jets arrested one pilot, who ejected himself after being hit in the airspace of Pakistan in Azad Jammu and Kashmir - something that came as an unexpected setback for India.

Tensions have been running high since Indian aircraft crossed into Pakistan on Tuesday carrying out what India called a pre-emptive strike against militants blamed for a February 14 suicide attack in Indian Kashmir that killed more than 40 troops.

Pakistan's military spokesman Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor said the pilot was being "treated as per norms of military ethics".

Pakistan dismissed the attack as a failure.

In the wake of protests from the BJP, CPI-M leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said on Friday that he had made no anti-national remark but only criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi after India's aerial attack on terror camps in Pakistan.

The sources also said that four of the P5 countries - the permanent members of the UN Security Council - are firmly with India.

Alarming the global community, tensions escalated after the February 14 suicide bombing in Indian Kashmir, with the attack claimed by a Pakistan-based militant group.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence from Britain and partition in 1947.

According to news reports, India wanted to send a special flight to Pakistan to bring back the IAF pilot, but Pakistan turned down the request.

Islamabad denies any of its aircraft were shot down.

Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi has confirmed that terror mastermind and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) supremo Masood Azhar is in the country.

But fresh violence raged in Kashmir, with 11 people killed in the Indian-administered part of the tinder-box territory, suggesting that the spike in tensions sparked by the death of 40 Indian soldiers in a suicide bombing last month may not be over.

Thousands of Indians, some waving flags and singing, gathered Friday to give a hero's welcome to an air force pilot due to be returned across the border after being shot down by Pakistan.
