New Polestar 2 unveiled as AWD electric five-door fastback

Volvo, or rather Polestar, has unveiled a auto that on paper looks like the ultimate Tesla Model 3 rival the industry has been hoping for, which is good, because competition breeds innovation.

Built on the modular CMA architecture as the XC40, the Polestar 2 has the battery pack mounted on the floor for optimal centre of gravity and weight distribution along with increase in chassis rigidity.

In the U.S., the fully loaded Polestar 2 Launched Edition starts at R880,000.

Polestar 2 is one of the first cars in the world to feature an infotainment system powered by Android which allows drivers to use Google Assistant, Google Maps and other apps from the Google Play Store.

The Polestar 2 will make its first public appearance next week at the Geneva Motor Show after which it will be on an worldwide roadshow through Europe, North America, and China.

Polestar is Volvo's all-electric-powered performance sub-brand.

"Polestar delivers electric performance cars that are great to own and drive". This addition gives the Polestar 2 a new set of high-performing dampers, brakes, and 20-inch forged wheels. It will further be equipped with phone-as-key technology and Polestar connected services such as pick-up and delivery. Smart features like enlarged graphics in the instrument cluster allow the driver to easily see the charging status and range before entering the auto.

"We chose to bring something different to the segment. Our avant-garde design has evolved from Polestar 1 into an edgier, bolder statement", says Maximilian Missoni, head of Design at Polestar.

From a design perspective, the Polestar 2 is an intriguing combination of rugged and lithe, offering up a slightly elevated driving position in a body style that combines the lines of a sedan with the versatility and cargo capacity of a hatchback. "We have also designed a standard vegan interior with progressive textiles that will appeal to the forward-thinking audience who will subscribe to Polestar 2".

The entry-level Polestar 2 is best-matched against the Dual Motor AWD version of the Model 3, which costs about the same and even has somewhat similar performance and economy figures.

The Polestar is available for order exclusively via the Polestar website, and pre-orders can be placed now. Production of the Polestar 2 will begin in China in early 2020 and will be available for global markets in both left- and right-hand drive.

The vehicle will be formally unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March. Other markets are under consideration for future expansion.
