Father gets 16 years for ‘monstrous’ acid attack on son

A father has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for plotting an acid attack on his three-year-old son during a bitter custody battle with the child's mother.

The 40-year-old, who can not be named to protect the child's identity, was convicted in Worcester Crown Court with five others of conspiring to throw sulfuric acid with intent to "burn, maim or disfigure" the boy in an attack inside a busy shop in July.

Prosecutors alleged the father wanted more contact with his son and organized the plot to manufacture evidence the child's mother was unfit to care for him.

The court heard the man's wife had left him in 2012, but when she briefly returned the man threatened to have the children killed.

Jonathan Rees QC, prosecuting, said the father was the "driving force" behind the attack, which took place at 2pm on 21 July previous year at Shrub Hill retail park in Worcester. "The family had been shopping for a birthday present".

A statement from the mother was read out loud in court.

"It is a family's life that has been ruined and a young boy that has been scarred for life".

Taking place at a Home Bargains store last July, the father orchestrated the attack by enlisting five other men to carry out the plan, all of whom were found guilty.

He nevertheless welcomed the verdict and noted that the perpetrators will spend a combined total of 78 years in prison.

Superintendent Damian Pettit described the attack as "horrific" and said the boy's scars "will prove a constant reminder of that terrible day".

The court heard that the boy repeatedly screamed "I hurt" following the attack.

The boy was treated for serious burns to his arms and face, and made a good recovery.

Jurors convicted Adam Cech, 27, of Farnham Road, Birmingham, Jan Dudi, 25, of Cranbrook Road, Birmingham, and Norbert Pulko, 22, of Sutherland Road, London, Jabar Paktia, 42, of New Hampton Road, Wolverhampton; and 43-year-old Saied Hussini, of Wrottesley Road, London of the offence.

Six were charged in the attack, including the father, who was not named for legal reasons.

The court is still considering a seventh defendant, Martina Badiova.
