Alex Telles converted a VAR-awarded penalty deep into extra time as Porto defeated Roma 3-1 on Wednesday to reach the Champions League quarter-finals following a 4-3 win on aggregate.

After cancelling out Roma's 2-1 first-leg lead to take the tie beyond 90 minutes, Telles' late strike, after a Video Assistant Referee review, earned them a 4-3 aggregate victory, and increased the pressure on the Italians' manager Eusebio Di Francesco.

In extra-time, Dzeko wasted a succession of chances to score the goal that would likely have taken Roma through.

An urgent meeting had been called on Thursday in Rome between the club's top officials to discuss Di Francesco's future.

Roma are fifth in Serie A and lost 3-0 to city rivals Lazio on Saturday.

The announcement comes the day after Roma's sporting director Monchi was involved in an altercation with fans and club president James Pallotta said his team had been "screwed again" after the loss to Porto.

"Since returning to the club, Eusebio has always acted professionally and put the club's needs ahead of his own".

The 49-year-old had received the backing of the players after the defeat to Porto, having led Roma to the Champions League semi-finals last season for the first time since 1984.

The veteran Italian boss - who won the Premier League title with Leicester in 2016 - was sacked by Fulham last week, with the club appearing destined for the drop.

Claudio Ranieri is the favorite to replace Di Francesco, and there's talk that a managerial change could happen very soon despite some pleas to keep the current manager until the end of the Serie A season.
