Jussie Smollett indicted on 16 felony counts by grand jury

Chicago police chiefs later alleged he made the story up in a bid to get a pay rise out of his bosses at Empire.

Last month Smollett was charged with felony disorderly conduct.

Jussie Smollett is shown in the hospital with the scratches police say he gave himself after the "attack", left. In addition, he has also been suspended from Empire. "The presumption of innocence, a bedrock in the search for justice, was trampled upon at the expense of Mr. Smollett and notably, on the eve of a mayoral election".

Empire star Jussie Smollett will be going into the weekend with a legal anvil hanging over his head. The actor was later arrested, but released on $100,000 bail.

Smollett, who was released on bail from jail the day after he was charged on February 20, is scheduled to appear in court next week.

Following the news, attorney Mark Geragos - who is representing Smollett - said in a statement obtained by Fox News that "the fact of an indictment was not unexpected".

What did he say happened?

The actor said the men shouted at him, wrapped a rope around his neck and poured an "unknown substance" on him.

How has the case unfolded?

Police pieced together much of their evidence by reviewing footage from about 55 police and private surveillance cameras showing the brothers' movements before and after the attack. There were also no witnesses.

In January, the actor claimed to be attacked by two men who yelled pro-President Trump remarks, along with racist language. He's now accused of allegedly orchestrating the attack with the Osundairo brothers, who he knew. On their return they were held for nearly 48 hours. "They do harm to every legitimate victim who's in need of support by police and investigators".

Smollett stated there were two men involved and though he couldn't physically identify their faces, they were white. According to the Huffington Post, he was being paid $65,000 per episode for his starring role. "Why would anyone, especially an African-American man, use the symbolism of a noose to make false accusations?" Chicago police took it a step further, accusing Smollett of faking the letter as well.

But the investigation turned on Smollett.
