Tesla Unveils 7-Seater Model Y

"There was a time when electric cars seemed very stupid and it wasn't that long ago", Musk told the audience.

The auto was unveiled at an event in Los Angeles. Since then the carmaker has made around 550,000 cars.

This set-up should help the Model Y make it into production quicker and cost less to develop. It is a sedan which can sprint from 0-60mph in around 2.5 seconds. Notably the the Model X's Falcon Doors are absent.

However, the Model 3 reveal (and its $35,000 price target) brought in hundreds of thousands of reservations at $1,000 each - essentially an interest-free loan for the capital-hungry EV market leader. He also put all of Tesla's cars on stage. The more powerful versions thus offer slightly less range than the small sedan, which is rated for 220 miles with a full charge in the least-expensive Standard Range and 325 in the Long Range version. The Semi truck is a gargantuan HGV which is battery powered, fast and has up to 500-miles of range. Model X may have been too unique, but Model Y threatens to shift over to the opposite end of the spectrum, to a space inhabited by the worst examples of "brand engineering" and barely-distinguishable variants. It gains large headlamps and short front overhangs while design elements to the rear are similar to that seen on the Model X with tail lamp units similar to those seen on the Model 3. "This timing likely implies the company is postponing the costly Model Y ramp in 2019 to conserve cash", Munster wrote in a note. (Ford owns the trademark on Model E, hence the Model 3 name.) For its part, the Model Y was touted as combining the functionality of a midsize crossover with the agility of a sports auto. "It's tough to say the Model 3 was the wrong vehicle all along". It will accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.5 seconds. The Long-Range Model Y will sport 300 miles range and will sticker for $48,200. There will be multiple versions of the auto. A standard version will be available in spring 2021, priced at $39,000 and with a 230-mile (370 km) range, Tesla said. Therefore prices will kick off at $39,000 in the USA for the Standard Range (when it's available), or $47,000 for the Long Range.

The Long Range Model will have 300-miles of range. In between them all is the Dual Motor AWD version that offers 280 miles of range, a 0-60 time of 4.8 seconds, and a $51,000 (£38,500) price tag. All three variants will launch in Fall 2020. (The seven-seat interior will be available in 2012.) Each second row seat folds flat independently, creating flexible storage. Make that $1,000, thank you!

This blindsided employees and investors alike, and Tesla backtracked 10 days later, saying in a blog post that more stores would remain open and that it will need to raise vehicle prices by about 3 percent on average worldwide.
