New Persona 5: The Royal trailer bolsters Smash datamine rumor

Based on previous Persona releases, and the trailer, we suspect Persona 5 The Royal will be a kind of Game of the Year edition that features some additional content.

Today after the conclusion of the final special for Persona 5 the Animation it was revealed that the upcoming Persona title previously known only as P5R will be called Persona 5 The Royal.

The trailer for Persona 5 The Royale is focused on a new female character who is a student at Shujin Academy, the school where most of the main cast are also enrolled. At the start of the trailer she's asked by what she thinks about the Phantom Thieves, the vigilante group the player controls in the game. Her response is surprising - while she thinks helping people is good, she thinks The Phantom Thieves are actually bad people and what they're doing doesn't help anyone. "In the end, I think those are things you must fix yourself". Or perhaps a brand new character.

The tantalisingly short trailer has left us hungry for more. We imagine a few new Personas will premiere at some point in the future, and maybe some new romance options. There's no word yet on releases for other consoles, however, so anyone hoping the rumors of Persona 5 coming to the Switch are true will just have to wait and see if Atlus makes it happen.

More information about Persona 5 The Royal is expected to be revealed at the "Persona Super Live: P-Sound Street 2019: Welcome to No. Q Theater" concert on April 24th.

If you're unfamiliar with Persona 5, it was launched in Japan on September 15, 2016, but western fans had to wait until April 4, 2017, to be able to finally play the game in English.
