Man arrested in vicious subway attack on elderly, homeless woman in NYC

The suspect behind a vicious attack against a 78-year-old woman on the subway is in custody, NYPD officials said Saturday.

The video was widely circulated online, leading to the arrest of the man.

He wrote: "Individual below is WANTED for a heinous attack of an elderly woman aboard a #2 train on March 10, 2019, at approx 3:10am, at the Nereid Ave Station in the #Bronx", he tweeted.

Gomez, of Yonkers, New York, had been arrested Saturday in connection to the March 10 encounter, which was caught on video. It showed a tall man in glasses, a dark jacket and a knit cap forcefully kicking the woman while she was aboard a train.

WPIX reported that 36-year-old Marc Gomez is expected to be charged with second degree assault, third degree assault and harassment.

As the man walked past bystanders and off the train, he shouted "WorldStar that!" a reference to a popular site that posts videos of people involved in altercations, among other things.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) spokeswoman Amanda Kwan described it to the New York Post as "an extremely disturbing video". He was apprehended on Saturday, Shea said.

The 78-year-old victim was treated and released from the hospital, the NYPD said, adding that she "is getting the care, advocacy and support needed".
