Adam Sandler is returning to the show that made him famous.

The date of his appearance will be May 4, and Sandler will be joined by musical guest Shawn Mendes. Some of Sandler's most renowned characters during his five-year run on the show included Opera Man, Cajun Man, Canteen Boy, the Herlihy Boy, and... well, you get the idea. He starred in such comedies as "Big Daddy", "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore", among dozens more. 'I don't know how good it would be. "I did what I could do on that show".

He has returned to the series over the years in different bit pieces, performing songs and sketches with the various members of the rotating cast.

Sandler's SNL return is a surprise considering he has long said he wouldn't host, telling fellow SNL vet Norm Macdonald, "Why should I?" Since then, he has returned for the show's 40th anniversary (in 2014), plus two other cameos.

Sandler's latest stand-up special, "100% Fresh", is now streaming on Netflix, and his latest project, an upcoming film titled Murder Mystery, in which he will star alongside Jennifer Aniston and Gemma Arterton is due out later this year.

The actor is also on a standup comedy tour to promote his recently released Netflix special "100% Fresh".
